An hour ride from Hajós is one of the oldest settlements of Hungary, home to the famous Busójárás (Busó-walking). In the Carnival season the Busós of Mohács, wearing flamboyant, frightening masks, that are carved out of willow trees, rolling clappers, and shaking cowbells, turn the town into a joyful maelstrom. The winter burying, spring welcoming big feast ends with a spectacular cheerful burial of the Carnival on Shrove Tuesday. The Busójárás of Mohács has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of the UNESCO in 2009, attracting ten thousands of visitors.
